Spring Update
It’s 4:30 am, and as good a time as any to write a vineyard update. I can’t fall back to sleep because the Wind Machines are roaring at full force, fighting the spring frost in Napa Valley. This ritual of mostly false alarms is played out every year from bud break till the last full moon in April, the good news is that the vintner usually wins. The view looks and sounds like a battle field, roaring V-8 motors driving giant airplane propellers to create an inversion so the warm air above will mix with the cooler air below. All of this chaos comes from neighboring properties that surround the vineyard, but here at Madrigal the gods shined upon us and we have enough water to fight frost with sprinklers, much cleaner and more environmentally sound practice.
The vineyards are looking just as we want them to with the buds stretching about 6 inches in length. Now that the rains of El Nino 2015/16 have finally ended, we are able to get equipment into the vineyards. We have started the important process of mowing the mustard and disking the fields to add nutrients back into the earth. Our vineyards received about 35 inches of rain this year although much better precipitation than last year we are still 6 inches below average and I have some doubt that the drought is fully over.
As we approach the summer season and the vines continue to grow and develop there is much to celebrate. For this reason, we would like to invite you to the Madrigal Family Winery Heritage Party.
The Party is on May 7th, from 12pm-4pm. This year lunch will be served by Taco Addiction and there will be live music by T Luke and the Tight Suits. Check them out on YouTube HERE.
We will be pouring new release 2014 Estate Sauvignon Blanc, 2014 Estate Garnacha and 2013 Estate Cabernet Franc. If you would like to attend please RSVP to tblum@madrigalfamiltywinery.com or call the winery, (707) 942-8619
To get you ready for the party, I put together a special Heritage Celebration 3-pack:
2014 Estate Sauvignon Blanc- Really delicious, best Sauvignon Blanc we’ve made in the last 5 years. Aromas of peaches and melon with great mouthfeel and great acid balance. This wine screams “SUMMER”. $32 per bottle
2014 Estate Garnacha- This is the 4th release of this wine and we still only produce 50 cases of it. Delicious, medium bodied and bursting with fruit. Make sure you get some, It usually only lasts for a month or so. When it’s gone it’s gone, don’t wake up with Garnacha Envy! $50 per bottle
2013 Estate Cabernet Franc- OK, if you had the 2012 Cabernet Franc, you know that it was really good. It received 91 points and is a “cellar selection” in Wine Enthusiast magazine. That being said, the 2013 is a better wine and mainly because it is a reflection of vintage and 2013 was a great vintage! This wine is really aromatic, a lot of upfront fruit and chocolate notes. $70 per bottle
The Heritage Celebration 3-pack is $152 and that includes shipping. Use discount code CELEBRATION to include shipping. Wine club members will also get your club level discount. This offer is good till May Day.
